Ground Source Case Study: Mr Taylor from Smeeton Westerby

After considering ground source heating for almost a year, when the building work started on Mr Taylor’s new 3-bed farmhouse, following a recommendation from a friend he contacted Lewington Solar to find out whether it would be a viable heating solution for his new home.

Mr Taylor explains: “As we were building the new farmhouse, we couldn’t have had a better opportunity to install a renewable energy system. Lowering our running costs and our environmental impact were high on our agenda for our new home and we wanted to make the house as energy efficient as possible. Ground source heating appealed to us because it isn’t affected by the weather and can produce enough energy to power both the heating and hot water all year round.”

Following a consultation with Darren King, Lewington Solar’s Renewable Energy Manager, Mr Taylor was advised that he’d need one heat pump, one 380-metre ground loop buried 2 metres deep and one 180-litre hot water cylinder, taking the total cost, including the underfloor heating and installation, to £11,500.

Darren says: “On average, the system will give Mr Taylor £3.20 worth of energy for every £1 of energy he pays for (known as the coefficient of performance). On times, the coefficient of performance can reach as high has £5.

“From 2012, because Lewington Solar is an MCS accredited installer, the ground source system should also generate an annual income of £700 or more per year from the government’s renewable heat incentive (RHI) scheme. This income is in addition to the annual fuel savings, which we estimate to be £200, totalling £4000 over 20 years.

“Mr Taylor’s ground source heating system should pay itself back within approximately 11 years, so over a 20-year plus life expectancy, he will enjoy at least nine years of pure savings and income.”

With the installation and farmhouse complete, Mr Taylor says: “I am very pleased we went ahead with the ground source heating system. It produces a constant temperature to make the house nice and warm but without using any fossil fuels. It’s also nice not having any radiators.

“The service from Lewington Solar was extremely professional. They are very friendly people to have around the house and on the grounds of their expertise and the performance of the system, I have already recommended ground source heating and Lewington Solar to family and friends.”

Know the facts

Ground source heating pumps

  • If you have more than 500 square metres of land (10 x 50 metres), then your property is suitable for ground source heating pumps.
  • Ground source heating pumps provide heating and hot water all year round. This is because they are located below the earth’s surface, which stays at a consistent temperature, regardless of the season.
  • For a 3-bed semi-detached house, latest figures from the Energy Saving Trust show a good-performing ground source heating pump will typically save £160 per year when replacing an oil heating system, £370 per year when replacing a solid heating system and £530 per year when replacing an electric heating system. Annual carbon dioxide reductions are 1,560kg, 5,330kg and 5,445kg respectively.
  • Ground source heating pumps are extremely low maintenance and offer a life expectancy in excess of 20 years.
  • Ground source heating pumps from Lewington Solar come with a 5-year warranty and don’t need any servicing or maintenance.
  • The average payback period for ground source heating pumps is 9 to 11 years.
  • Ground source heating pumps are subject to a reduced VAT rate of just 5 per cent.
  • Installing ground source heating pumps can increase the value of your home by up to £10,000 and make it easier to sell.
  • Ground source heating pumps produce enough consistent and reliable heat to act as the only heating system for your home. The heat pumps however can also be used in conjunction with other sources of non-renewable and renewable energy.
  • Planning permission is not needed, although we recommend you call your local planning office to check.
