Solar grant website launches

A new website offering up to date advice on solar grants available launched in the UK on Monday.   Solar Power Grants is a comprehensive guide to incentives available for installing solar technology into your home.  www.solarpowergrants.co.uk

The new website offers homeowners everything they need to know about the current incentives available, namely the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) for solar PV and the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) for solar water heating.

Solar Power Grants is a free of charge information service for homeowners who are looking into investing in solar technology for their home. All the relevant details on both the recently launched Feed-in Tariff and the anticipated Renewable Heat Incentive, due to be introduced on April 1 2011, are available. This includes information on the financial benefits, eligibility, how the schemes work and the legislation behind them.

As well as straight-forward jargon-free information, there is also a dedicated section for the latest news updates with current and future solar power grants. This is a great way to stay on top of fast-paced solar industry, get updates on which incentives are due to be launched and discover any further developments with the market as a whole.

David Holmes, the founder of Solar Power Grants, said: “It’s clear that more and more people are considering making the switch to go greener and solar appears to be the technology that’s at the forefront of these people’s minds.

“With the recent introduction of the Feed-in Tariff and the Renewable Heat Incentive just around the corner, there is a lot of information for those new to solar to catch up on.

“These incentives are the biggest news the UK solar industry has ever had. They will encourage a new wave of customers to switch to solar technologies, but it is vital these people are given the relevant information about how the schemes operate before they further pursue the option of having solar PV or solar water heating installed in to their homes.

“The information at Solar Power Grants is aimed to be user-friendly, simple and straight-forward. This way consumers can make an educated decision about whether solar is right for them and their household.”

Lewington Solar offer a range of renewable energy services including solar energy, ground source heating and now air source in the Leicestershire and Northamptonshire area. Many of their services are part funded through energy grants and offer long term energy saving.

How effective is solar water heating in England as we hardly ever have hot weather?

Sunshine

Yes we may not have an abundance of sunshine but Lewington Solar can still create enough energy via solar panels in your home

Solar water heating is now very efficient. About 4m² of good quality panels on a roof should provide the average family with around 50-60% of their hot water needs spread throughout the year (100% on good sunny days, 10% on gloomy days).

So do not worry you will still get enough sunlight to produce the energy needed to heat your home.

Solar heating – is it suitable for my home?

Is a solar water heating system suitable for my home?

To tell if solar water heating is right for you, there are a few key questions to consider:

* Do you have a sunny place to put solar panels? You’ll need around 5 square metres of roof space which faces east to west through south and receives direct sunlight for the main part of the day. Alternatively, if you do not have a south facing roof and if you have space, you could install two panels, one facing east and one facing west – but this will make installation more costly. The panels don’t always have to be mounted on a roof, they can be fixed to a frame on flat roofs.

* Do you have space for a larger, or an extra, hot water cylinder? If a dedicated solar cylinder is not already installed then you will need to replace the existing cylinder, or add a dedicated cylinder with a solar heating coil.

* Is your current boiler compatible with solar water heating? Most conventional boiler and hot water cylinder systems are compatible with solar water heating. If your boiler is a combination boiler (combi) and you don’t currently have a hot water tank then a solar hot water system may not be compatible.

* Do you need planning permission? In England most solar water heating systems don’t need planning permission, but it is always best to consult your local planning office if you live in a Listed Building, or a building in Conservation Area or World Heritage Site. If you live in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland you will need to consult your local authority.

Solar heating – how does it work

How do solar water heating systems work?

Solar water heating systems use solar panels, called collectors, fitted to your roof. These collect heat from the sun and use it to warm water which is stored in a hot water cylinder.

There are two types of solar water heating panels, they are evacuated tubes (like in the picture above) and flat plate collectors. Flat plates collectors can be fixed on the roof tiles or integrated into the roof.

A boiler or immersion heater can be used as a back up to heat the water further to reach the temperature set by the cylinders thermostat when the solar water heating system does not reach that temperature. (The cylinder thermostat should be set at 60 degrees centigrade.)

Larger solar panels can also provide energy to heat your home as well – though usually only in the summer months when home heating is unnecessary.

EU changes lead to increaded energy bills

Energy bills are set to rise after tough EU clampdown on greenhouse gas emissions

Energy bills will rise but thousands of jobs could be created in green industries under a European plan to impose the world’s most stringent restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions.

The UK Government has voiced support to the proposal tabled in Brussels for a new, much more onerous EU target for cutting carbon dioxide even though other nations with higher emissions have failed to commit to reciprocal action.

Ministers have abandoned their previous condition that the world must agree a legally binding treaty on emissions before the EU commits to a tougher target. It is thought that solar energy and other renewable energy methods are the main way to achieve the tough new targets.

The EU has already gone farther than the rest of the world by making a legally binding commitment to cut emissions by 20 per cent on 1990 levels by 2020. It is now preparing to raise the target to 30 per cent despite the failure of December’s climate change summit in Copenhagen.

Milliband announces green energy loan

The Energy and Climate Secretary Ed Miliband has announced a new “green loan” energy plan for homes.  It is designed to help people pay for green energy improvements to their homes to make them more energy efficient.

Home owners can borrow up to £10,000 to make improvements to their home.

Consumers will be offered long-term loans to install insulation, solar panels or other green technologies, which they can repay through energy bills, spreading the upfront cost over a number of years. The loan remains attached to the property where the technology was installed, allowing the resident to move house, knowing the new owner has taken over the repayment for the technological system.

The Pay As You Save (PAYS) scheme, which was first announced last year, has already been trialled by around 500 homes. Loans are expected to be available from 2012.
