Solar Energy Background
Solar Energy has been around for a long time but was often thought to be the preserve of the committed environmentalist. However during the last three years, two things have happened to make solar hot water installations very cost effective.
Firstly the cost of fossil fuels has risen dramatically
Secondly the volume of solar panel sales have increased making the product components costs cheaper.
For many these two reasons now makes solar hot water installations very financially viable, with far quicker payback periods.
The Solar panels work off absorption of light and U.V energy, not direct sunlight and as such are designed perfectly for our climate. Now over one in every five hundred homes in the UK has a solar installation, yet this is fifteen time’s less than in Germany even though they have similar levels of sunlight as the UK. Once the installation is complete all the energy that you get is free and will always be free. An average solar installation will pay for itself in eight to ten years, with fuel prices as they are now. With the added advantage that you will be working your current heating system less, increasing the lifespan of your boiler, meaning fewer maintenance costs.
How does it work?
Most installations will require a replacement hot water cylinder with a second coil inside it. The panels should be sited on a south facing roof, and then it’s a simple case of routing pipe work between the two. Once the system is commissioned there is very little need for maintenance. The panels absorb the sunlight which is transferred through the pumping station to the hot water cylinder.
How much does it cost?
The cost of a typical system depends on several factors,
- Type of existing heating system
- Size of hot water cylinder
- Size of property
- Number of panels to be used
Typical systems start from around £3,400 and takes 2-3 days to install. All installations are different and a quote would be needed from our Renewable Energy Manager. Planning permission is not generally needed, usually a quick phone call to the planning office will be enough, but we recommend you make this phone call.

I want a new boiler too, can you do this?
Yes, Lewington Heating & Gas started out as a heating & gas company that has expanded into renewable alternatives with the heating & gas side is still growing. We often get asked to upgrade the existing boiler with solar thermal, this is because an inefficient boiler can make having solar thermal useless. Unique to Lewington Solar we can upgrade your existing boiler while we complete the solar thermal, this means that you wont have the hassle of 2 separate companies trying to work together and be left days or weeks without your new boiler/solar thermal, we will complete them all together.
